I would like to share some wisdom I picked up from my pastor , Frank Friedmann, of Grace Life Fellowship in Baton Rouge Louisiana...
When you come across someone who has had a tragedy and they are wounded and mourning:
DON"T TRY TO FIX THEM
DON"T GIVE THEM SOME CHRISTIAN CLICHE
(God is in control, God will bring good out of this, It's going to be ok etc.)
You have a good motive. Everything inside you wants to help them feel better, to lift their pain... so you feel like you have to say something, but the problem is you don't know what to say, so all too often you will end up saying the wrong thing, something that hurts instead of helps...
So, may I help you in your desire to minister to those in pain?
Just tell them:
"I love you and I am praying for you"
That is enough...
